With Topographie, German artist and composer STURM puts forward an EP of 8 tracks. STURM creates neoclassical music - plain and simple. With piano as the focal-point, but using an array of instruments from the classical repertoire as accompaniment, STURMs pieces are complex in timbres, yet retains clarity in their expressions. To further emphasize this clarity, the pieces are very short, almost taking character of sound installments.
The title is a reminicence on German documentary film maker and author Dieter Wieland. Dieter had a tv-documentary in the 70s until the late 80s that critically discussed mankinds destruction of nature - a topic that play a big part in the artist’s own life. All pieces on the EP are influenced by the filmmakers works.
The music on Topographie flows quietly from one track to the next, and the different installments weave together a 14 minute exploration of classical music in the tradition that fellow countryman Nils Frahm introduced with his Erased Tapes label. The EP is available on all streaming services and as an extremely limited dub plate 10” vinyl. It’s a tremendous pleasure to release this EP on A Quiet Room Recording.
The artwork is made by Emma Pattenden. Emma is a Melbourne based artist who’s practice explores a variety of artistry techniques including drawing, painting and sculpture. Her art process and output is extremely intricate, methodical and often meditative, which begin to honour the importance of analogue processes in both design and contemporary art.
Emma’s stories continue to be shaped by her love for her surroundings, especially the Australian Landscape. Her art responds to the relationship between the landscape and people defining new ways to represent, relate and connect to it.
Emma says: ’My artistic output continues to work with capturing experiences felt in places that have had a profound effect on me. It is an expression of my conscious and subconscious mind, fed through letting all my senses activate and become a part of a place. The lines, colours shapes and forms that come out through my hand are instilled with the movement, smell, texture, and taste of an experience.’
